How to Plan a Self-Drive Snowmobile Day in Levi

A self-drive snowmobile day in Levi is one of the most rewarding ways to explore Finnish Lapland on your own terms. With 886 km of officially marked trails spreading across the Levi area, the landscape is yours to discover at your own pace. The key to making the most of it is solid preparation before you ever start the engine. This guide walks you through every planning step so your day runs smoothly from first throttle to final return.

At Kinos Safaris, we have been running snowmobile rental in Levi from our base in the heart of Levi since 2003, and we know exactly where riders lose time or run into avoidable problems. Follow the steps below and you will be set up for a confident, safe, and genuinely enjoyable day on the trails.

Start with the Rental Period

Choose your rental window before you plan anything else, because every other decision flows from it. We offer three fixed rental periods for our premium snowmobiles:

  • Morning session: 09:00 to 13:00 (4 hours)
  • Afternoon session: 13:00 to 17:00 (4 hours)
  • Full day: 09:00 to 17:00 (8 hours)

Each rental includes a 200 km daily allowance. If you exceed that, additional kilometres are charged at €1 each. Fuel is not included in the rental price, but refuelling is available at our Safari House, so you will not need to search for a petrol station in the middle of your ride. Confirm your preferred slot when you book, and build your entire route plan around the hours you have available.

Use Current Route Information

Check the official trail status before you finalise any route. Conditions in Lapland change quickly, and a trail that was open yesterday may be closed today due to weather, maintenance, or safety concerns. The Levi area trail network spans 886 km of marked snowmobile routes, giving you a wide range of options regardless of which sections are temporarily closed.

For Levi’s marked snowmobile trails, use the Levi Infogis map on your smartphone for live navigation. We also sell printed trail maps at our office for €10, which are worth carrying as a backup in areas with limited mobile signal. Pick up your map when you collect the snowmobile, review the current open trails with our staff, and mark your intended route before you set off.

Plan Fuel and Kilometre Use

Fuel planning is one of the most overlooked steps in self-drive snowmobile route planning in Levi. Snowmobile fuel consumption varies depending on speed, terrain, and snow conditions, so rather than calculating exact litres, plan your route in kilometres and stay well within your 200 km allowance.

  1. Estimate the total distance of your intended route using the Levi Infogis map or the printed trail map.
  2. Add a buffer of at least 20 to 30 km for detours, slower progress in deep snow, or exploring a side trail.
  3. Refuel at the Safari House before you head out, and again during the day if your route takes you back past the starting point.

If your planned route comes close to the 200 km limit, trim it. Running out of fuel on a remote trail section is avoidable with a little arithmetic before you leave.

Allow Time for the Return

Many riders underestimate return time. Fatigue, slower afternoon snow conditions, and the temptation to linger at a scenic viewpoint all add minutes to the journey back. As a rule, plan your turnaround point so that you have at least as much time to return as it took to reach that point, and then add a 20-minute buffer on top.

If you are on a half-day session ending at 13:00 or 17:00, set a phone alarm 90 minutes before your return deadline. That reminder gives you a clear signal to start heading back without rushing. Arriving late with the snowmobile is stressful and may incur additional charges, so build the return journey into your plan from the start, not as an afterthought.

Know the Route Restrictions

Rental customers must stay on marked official snowmobile trails at all times. Riding off-trail is not permitted and carries both legal and safety risks. Every driver must present a valid driving licence at collection. Without it, we cannot hand over the snowmobile.

When planning your snowmobile route in Levi, do not assume that trails cross into Sweden or Norway without verifying border-crossing permissions in advance, as these are subject to specific regulations that change seasonally. If you are unsure whether a section of trail is open or permitted, ask us at the office before you go. It is a quick conversation that can save a wasted detour.

Collect Your Snowmobile from Kinos Safaris

Arrive at our office in Levi centre at the start of your booked session. Before you head out, run through this seven-point checklist with our staff:

  1. Time: Confirm your session start and end times.
  2. Trail status: Ask about any closures or changes to the current trail network.
  3. Map: Collect your printed trail map or confirm the Levi Infogis app is loaded on your phone.
  4. Fuel: Refuel at the Safari House before departure.
  5. Weather: Check the forecast and dress accordingly for conditions on the trail.
  6. Breaks: Identify a planned rest point so you pace yourself and the machine.
  7. Return time: Confirm your turnaround point and set your reminder alarm.

Once you have worked through the checklist, our team will walk you through the snowmobile controls, safety equipment, and any specific notes about the day’s trail conditions. If you would prefer a fully guided experience rather than riding independently, take a look at how we compare self-drive rental with a guided safari to find the format that suits you best. Otherwise, you are ready to go. Head out, stay on the marked trails, and enjoy one of the finest ways to experience Lapland in winter.
