You have traveled all the way to Finnish Lapland. You have hiked the fells, breathed the cleanest air in Europe, and watched the midnight sun hover above the treeline. But have you floated across a glassy lake in a wood-heated sauna, then plunged into the cool water under a sky that never goes dark?
A sauna raft cruise in Levi combines two things Finland does better than anywhere else: lakeside slow travel and the ancient ritual of sauna. It is one of the most memorable ways to spend a summer evening in Lapland, and it is available right here on the lakes of Sirkkajärvi and Levijärvi.
Float, Steam, and Swim on Sirkkajärvi Lake
Most lake cruises let you sit and watch the scenery. This one invites you to feel it with every sense.
Our ferry glides gently along Sirkkajärvi and Levijärvi, offering panoramic views toward Levitunturi fell and its surrounding landscape. While the boat moves, a small wood-heated sauna on board is fired up and ready for guests. You step from the warmth of the sauna straight into the lake for a swim, then wrap yourself in a blanket on one of the ferry’s soft sofas.
Here is what a typical cruise looks like:
- Approximately two hours of unhurried cruising across two lakes
- A wood-heated sauna available throughout the voyage
- The chance to swim directly from the raft into the lake
- Soft sofas and blankets on deck for relaxing between sauna rounds
- Freshly made coffee and pancakes available for purchase on board
- Views of Levitunturi fell from the water, with daylight lasting well into the evening during the nightless night season
In autumn, the experience shifts. The midnight sun gives way to darker skies, and the northern lights may become visible from the deck, turning the cruise into something truly extraordinary.
What Makes This Sauna Cruise Distinctly Finnish
A sauna boat in Finland is not a novelty gimmick. Sauna is woven into the fabric of Finnish life, and combining it with water is the most traditional way to experience it. Finns have always built their saunas at the water’s edge so they can cool off with a swim between rounds.
On our ferry, that tradition floats with you. The sauna is small and wood-heated, exactly the way it should be. The lake water is clean and refreshing. And the pace is deliberately slow, giving you time to settle into the rhythm of heat, cool water, rest, and repeat.
This experience suits a wide range of visitors:
- Couples looking for a relaxed and romantic evening on the water
- Families with children who want a gentle adventure (the ferry accommodates up to 40 people on its soft sofas)
- Groups of friends exploring summer activities in Levi
- Solo travelers curious about authentic Finnish culture
You do not need any sauna experience. You do not need to be a strong swimmer. You simply show up, dress for the weather, and let the evening unfold.
Practical Details and How to Book
We want you to arrive prepared so you can fully enjoy the cruise. Here is everything you need to know.
What to Wear and Bring
Lapland summer evenings can be cool, even when the sun is still shining. Dress in warm layers and bring a hat or light beanie. Blankets are provided on board, but your own warm clothing makes a big difference.
If you plan to use the sauna and swim, bring a swimsuit and a towel. Please note that the dressing room space on the ferry is very limited, so wearing your swimsuit under your clothes is a practical choice.
